Urinary tract infections are commonly caused when resident bacteria of the large intestine, such as Escherichia coli, migrate to the urethra. This can result with infection of the urethra, bladder, and kidneys in extreme cases. Women have shorter urethras, which increases incidence of infection.

?-?Mannose enters the bloodstream directly, and upon exposure within the kidney and urinary tract, it prevents adhesion and attaches to E. coli for excretion.
